Cova’s water treatment technology is a low-cost, low-maintenance, locally-sourced solution that attaches to any rural community’s water tank and inactivates pathogens in water systems by releasing a controlled dosage of chlorine. One system can provide safe water for up to 1,000 community members and requires no electricity to operate.

Water Source Requirements

Cova’s water treatment technology is designed for use in rural areas with a gravity fed water system having a flow rate between 2 and 20 gallons per minute. The unit easily integrates into most existing water systems in Central America. The water supply should have minimal organic material present and turbidity levels of less than 5 NTUs.

Materials Needed

Cova’s treatment system uses inexpensive, locally-sourced materials including PVC piping, T-joints, caps, and ball valves. In addition to raw materials, plans, templates, instructions, and trainings are provided to communities to ensure long-term success.

Water Treatment Used

Communities use locally-sourced chlorine tablets (calcium hypochlorite) to disinfect their water. Water chlorination has been recognized by the WHO as one of the safest, low-cost, and effective methods of treating drinking water.

Over 50 centrally located chlorine distribution centers established across Central America.

Strategically located along main roads and surrounded by 5-15 communities that Cova serves, these small businesses greatly increase an individual’s income and can be easily operated out of a home or corner store. These entrepreneur’s receive training on accounting, business practices, inventory management, and proper tablet storage and handling standards.

We believe that everyone has the right to safe drinking water.

Cova’s on the ground teams are able to quickly test the quality of water both in the field and at our advanced water quality labs in our centrally located Nicaragua and Honduras offices.
