Climate Change

Safe drinking water and a healthy planet are closely intertwined.

As the planet warms, access to safe drinking water is at risk, especially for vulnerable communities.

Climate change is making safe water harder to access

Safe drinking water and a healthy planet are inextricably intertwined, affecting water availability, quality, and access.

Climate change is making access to safe drinking water increasingly difficult across Central America. Drought, extreme weather, wildfires, soil erosion, storm-damaged infrastructure, and deforestation are all degrading both the quality and quantity of available water.

In response, Cova, in partnership with the United States Forest Service and other local NGOs, is working to reverse this trend by restoring degraded landscapes and promoting sustainable water management practices rooted in local knowledge and community engagement.

42 Communities

Over forty communities are partnering with Cova, working on reforesting the areas around their watershed.

By the end of the century, rainfall in Honduras is projected to decrease by 20%, leading to a 41% reduction in water availability, while water usage will continue to increase – UNDP

Through a combination of watershed restoration, reforestation, and environmental education, we are building a more resilient and thriving watershed ecosystem—one that can withstand the pressures of climate change and provide clean, reliable water for generations to come. Our strong partnerships with communities, NGOs, and government organizations create local investment and ensure sustainable results.
