Nearly half of rural Latin America lacks access to safely managed drinking water.
In rural Latin America and the Caribbean, 47% of communities (55 million people) lack access to safely managed drinking water and only 11% have the resources to provide it (WHO/UNICEF JMP, 2025). These rural systems are commonly operated by volunteer community water committees, which often have limited technical, financial, and institutional support needed to provide safe and reliable drinking water.
