Safe Water Is Stewardship

 In People

Water doesn’t stay safe on its own. People keep it safe. It’s a promise that communities make to one another. It’s a promise that the water families drink will be safe. And it’s a promise that must be kept every day.

Cova’s Circuit Rider Model helps communities maintain safe water systems long after infrastructure is installed by supporting the local leaders and operators committed to keeping that promise.

On World Water Day, we shine a light on people who keep the promise. They are Circuit Riders, system operators, local government, community leaders, parents. And they are many!

Community leaders like Rosalinda help keep systems running smoothly. As treasurer of her community water board, neighbors stop by her home each Saturday to deposit water fees (and to talk fútbol!). A lifelong resident, she believes that when one person steps up, everyone rises.

“Water is a treasure that many do not have, so we must protect it. If my neighbor is doing well, I am doing well.”

Community operators like Salvador work to protect the water everyone depends on. He maintains the system, monitors the chlorine supply, and manages the valves that ensure each community sector receives access to the safe water that flows through the system.

“We are focusing on making sure we have continual chlorination. I feel good to be able to give a service to the community.”

Health promoters like Maria are familiar faces in communities. Maria regularly visits households to test water quality, answer questions, and help families understand how to keep their water safe. Her visits help ensure safe water practices are part of everyday life.

“I feel satisfied because everybody knows that we are drinking quality water.”
